Landowner Assistance

Forestry Assistance for Connecticut Landowners
The Division of Forestry has three Service Foresters available to provide technical advice and assistance to owners of forest land throughout the state. This service is available to private citizens, municipalities, conservation groups or other private or public organizations.

Classification of Land as "Forest Land" for Taxation Purposes
The State Forester is responsible for establishing the standards for what qualifies land as "forest land" as per section 12-107d of the Connecticut General Statutes.  Individual property owners who wish to take advantage of this opportunity must have their land inspected by a properly qualified professional forester.

Two Resources Regarding Estate Planning of Value to Forest Landowners
The Green Valley Institute has produced a very useful brochure that can be of great assistance to landowners exploring the issue of Estate Planning.  The title of this brochure is "Your Family Land: Legacy or Memory" (4.8 MB) and is available through the Green Valley Institute website.

The US Forest Service has made available as a free pdf download a 200 page soft-covered book entitled "Estate Planning for Forest Landowners: What Will Become of Your Timberland?" (22.3 MB).  You may request a hardcopy of this publication through the Forest Service.

Carbon Market Opportunities for Private Forest Landowners
The US Forest Service has put together an excellent website summarizing the issues and questions regarding opportunities that may exist for private forest landowners in the developing markets for trade in means of reducing atmospheric carbon.  This website includes an overview of the issues relating to climate change and carbon sequestration, and the role the forest might play in reducing the level of greenhouse gasses.
